What is CQC Registration?

CQC Registration is the formal process through which health and social care providers in the UK apply to the Care Quality Commission for permission to deliver services. It is a legal requirement that spans various sectors, including hospitals, nursing homes, dental practices, and home care services. The aim is to guarantee that care services meet the necessary standards to ensure the well-being and safety of service users.

Who needs to register with CQC?

Any person (Registered Manager) or organisation (service provider) who provides regulated activity in England must be CQC registered. In fact, it’s an offence to provide regulated activity whilst not registered.

What does CQC Registration involve?

When registering your business with CQC, there is a registration fee to pay along with an online application form that must also be completed, which will include your business information, registration history, business location and the services that you offer. Once the application is submitted, it will be reviewed by CQC where they’ll assess if your business is eligible.

Upon the completion of this first stage, you must complete the Provider Information Collection (PIC), which is a questionnaire that covers services, staff and procedures. The questionnaire is designed to give CQC a good idea of how your business operates and whether there are any areas of improvement.

A CQC inspection of your service will then take place. This can be either announced or unannounced, and can include conversations with staff, families, and individuals that are currently using your service. A CQC inspection will cover your business’ grounds, the services that you offer and your record history.

After the CQC inspection is completed, you will receive a rating of either Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement or Inadequate. The best way to prepare for a CQC inspection is through having a mock CQC inspection, which is a popular service that we offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information do I need to have available?

A valid DBS; business information including registration history, location, and services you want to offer; details of the registered manager; how your service will meet the standards of CQC’s quality statements; the aims and objectives of your service / your “statement of purpose”.

This isn’t exhaustive and we’ll run through all of this with you during the registration process.

How long does registration usually take?

It’s hard to give an exact answer, as it depends on how quickly you can have all the required information available for submission. Things like a DBS can take some time so it’s important to allow a few weeks before the registration is submitted. Once submitted, CQC don’t give a timeline but it can take minimum 10 weeks and beyond due to a backlog of registration applications.

Do you offer post-registration support?

Yes, once you are registered we can help with setting up your processes and procedures, audit your service from top to bottom, and a whole host of other services.
