Registering successfully with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the first step to providing regulated activity. It is a multi-stage process that you are best off preparing for in advance to avoid delays. You’ll need to show how your service will meet the quality statements to deliver high quality care, so get prepared for that too.
For a smooth registration, you’ll need to have a good understanding of the regulations, legal requirements and familiarise yourself with the Health and Social Care Act.
Before you start registering your service, make sure you ask yourself if the service you will be providing is; Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. Do you have evidence supporting this?
If your application is incomplete or missing any documentation CQC request, it will be rejected. We recommend you only start the application process once everything for your service is in place, including the location of the service and a plan for staffing.

- Staffing Plan & Training Requirements
- Details of your registered manager (application forms for RM must be submitted at the same time as CQC registration)
- Registered manager qualifications
- Business info including registration history, location and services on offer
- (Registered office if Domiciliary Care)
- Website address
- Aims and objectives (statement of purpose)
- How your service will meet the quality statements (mentioned above)
CQC registration is a legal requirement if you are providing regulated activity. It is a criminal offence to deliver regulated services without being registered.
